In this challenging competition, students select a poem from the Poetry Out Loud database to memorize and recite. Students chose poems before Christmas break and then competed against each other in their English classes. Classroom winners and volunteers continued on to the school-wide competition held on Wednesday, January 29. A judging panel composed of high school staff and community members rated the students’ performances in terms of voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding and other criteria established by The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
Freshman Courtney Thompson placed third with her recitation of “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou, senior Grace Robison placed second with the poem “Sheet Music” by Brigit Pegeen Kelly, and freshman Megan Lowman won the contest with her rendition of “Meditation on a Grapefruit” by Craig Arnold.
All three winners received prizes, and Megan will advance to the state competition which will be held Saturday, February 22, in Indianapolis.
Please join the WCHS English department in congratulating Megan and wishing her good luck at state!
