HARTER TO HUNTINGTON FOR TRACK & FIELD

WARSAW – Warsaw Community High School Track & Field standout Mariah Harter made it official on Tuesday, inking a letter of intent to attend Huntington University and run Track & Field for the Foresters.

Harter, a four-year letter winner for coach Scott Erba, has been a reliable performer for the Lady Tiger program. Harter’s efforts last year not only helped her 4x100 relay team establish a school record, it turned into a state-runner up performance that was the 12th best time the history of Indiana girls track & field. Harter also competes in the 100 and 200 for the Tigers and is hoping to return to Indianapolis this season once again.

Harter’s efforts last year were noticed as she earned Most Improved for the Lady Tigers, and she credits the Lady Tiger Track & Field program and Coach Scott Erba for preparing her for the challenges of competing at the next level.

The speedy senior not only has left an impression on the track, her efforts in the classroom, school and community have been noteworthy as well. A member of the Octagon Club, Tiger Student Athletic Board, and National Honor Society, Harter has also served the past five years with Warsaw Community Church where she has functioned as a Small Group Leader. In the classroom, Harter has been impressive as well, with her hard work resulting in a tremendous 10.87 Grade Point Average on a 12-point scale.

Harter, intending to major in Social Work, hopes to attend Huntington for three years and earn a degree while running for coach Tom King.

The Foresters compete in the NAIA and the Crossroads Conference.

TIGERS’ SANDS COMMITS TO EARLHAM

WARSAW – Warsaw Tiger sharpshooting guard Nick Sands made it official on Tuesday morning, declaring his intentions to attend Earlham College in Ricmond, Ind., and play basketball for the Quakers.

Energizing the Tigers backcourt this past season with steady play and solid ball control along with several long-range shots in big moments, Sands was the third leading scorer for Warsaw averaging almost 8 points a game. The Tigers finished the year 18-5 with a number of big wins and close battles with some of the state’s top teams.

A senior leader that will be difficult to replace in the Warsaw lineup, Sands was solid from the floor this season, shooting 40% overall (56-140), and his 81% performance at the free throw line (29-36) led Warsaw in that category.

Sands, a member of the National Honor Society, gained valuable experience off the court throughout his career at WCHS, working several community-service projects including this year’s Feed My Starving Children drive, and he served in internships with Judge Sutton and with Miner and Lemon.

Not only has Sands been a standout on the court and in the community, his effort and hard work elevated him in the classroom as well where he has earned an impressive 11.41 GPA on a 12-point scale.

Sands plans to study Political Science and play for coach Jason Polykoff. The NCAA-III program competes in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
